The Hero 529 Fine Point Fountain Pen

In my search for inexpensive fountain pens on eBay, I came across numerous listings for the Hero 529 fine point pen.  The price?  Less than $3.00 including shipping from China!  Amazing!

Having previously bought the Hero 9296 Accounting Pen with an EF nib, I thought I would give the 529 a shot.

Like the 9296, the 529 is a converter filler with a hooded nib.  It is reminiscent of the Hero 616 sans aerometric converter.  It is a pretty plain looking pen with a few small but noticeable blemishes, however, you really can't complain much for a pen that costs so little.

How does it write?  Nicely.  It has a very smooth nib that lays down a nice fine line.

The Hero 529 is a great little knock-about pen for throwing in your pocket or purse and leaving on your desk at the office.  Very nice for jotting down quick notes.  I plan to load mine with some archival iron gall ink for writing on cheap paper when the need arises.

TWSBI Eco Review

by Tony Thomas I know I am late to the party, but I finally bought a TWSBI Eco fountain pen, made in Taiwan. Due to its amazing popularity, the Eco has been a difficult pen for me to score. Every time I was ready to pull the trigger, it was on backorder. Now I see why. To their credit, TWSBI is company that puts a lot of thought into the design of their pens. They are always experimenting with new and innovative designs, building prototypes and getting feedback from the fountain pen community. Dollar General DG Office Writing Tablet

by Tony Thomas I am always in search of inexpensive, fountain pen friendly paper.  When visiting my local Dollar General store recently, I came across their "DG Office" writing tablet priced at $1.00 for 120 sheets. I always check to see where it was made and was excited when I saw it was made in Indonesia.  As I have reported earlier, I have had quite a bit of success with Indonesian paper supplied by iScholar.  The paper was unusually smooth for the price (most cheap paper feels like fine sandpaper these days). Since it was only a buck, I thought I would give it a try. I was quite pleased with the results.  Most pens and ink played well with this paper.  There was only a bit of feathering with my Pilot Custom 74 with SFM nib and Pilot blue ink, but this pen is notoriously wet.  My other pens with Waterman ink performed well.  There was a bit of bleed through/show through, especially with broader nibs and wetter pens, but for thin paper, this is to be expected.
